AP FAQ

Category: High School

What is AP?

AP stands for Advanced Placement. College Board is the name of the association that organizes the AP program. Many universities offer college credit for AP courses if you score a certain mark on the end-of-year standardized test. These courses are quite academically rigorous. A student does not need to take these classes to graduate from ISG Jubail.

At ISG Jubail we believe offering a variety of AP courses is important to provide an internationally recognized and academically rigorous component of our curriculum. Our non-AP courses are also academically rigorous, but are moderated internally and therefore offer more curricular flexibility; a component we also believe is important for a student’s education.

The Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board offering college-level curriculum and examinations to high school students. American colleges often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores above a certain number on the examinations. The AP curriculum for the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in each subject. For a high school course to have the AP designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain it satisfies the AP curriculum. If the course is approved the school may use the AP designation and the course will be publicly listed on the AP Ledger.

What is IB?

IB stands for International Baccalaureate (officially IBO, International Baccalaureate Organization). It is an organization that offers three curricula: PYP, Primary Years Programme; MYP, Middle Years Programme; DP, Diploma Programme. Some schools offer all three while others may only offer one or two. We are not offering the IB here at ISG Jubail.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a two-year educational programme primarily aimed at students aged 16–19 that provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education, and is accepted by many universities worldwide.

Does my child have to do AP courses?

No. Our non-AP courses will also be relevant and rigorous. AP courses are designed to go above and beyond - this may not be desirable for every student in every subject. ISG Jubail graduation requirements will not depend on whether your child does AP courses or not.
